Protective Fabric Certification

ProWearGear uses ‘Cutting Edge’ Spike and Blade Fabrics

ProWearGear is proud to offer gear made with the highest quality aramid protective fabrics. CLASSIC 3 easily met the highest standard – NIJ Spike Level 3 Standard 0115.00 – and is designed to meet severe threat  protection. It is also available in lighter weight CLASSIC 1 and mid level CLASSIC 2, also tested at NIJ Spike Levels 1 and 2.  ULTRA-GUARD,  a ProWearGear patented protective fabric technology, when used with CLASSIC 3,  exceeds the highest test standard – NIJ Spike Level 3 Standard 0115.00.  CLASSIC 1, CLASSIC 2 or CLASSIC 3 (highest) can be combined with ULTRA GUARD for the greatest protection. The ProWearGear collection of armored t-shirts, jackets, coveralls and gaiters are unique to market.

The NIJ will certify only one single garment type – the 2pc vest used in standard ballistic and spike vests. The NIJ is unable to certify other protective garment styles –  including shirts, jackets, gaiters and gauntlets because of the infinite designs possible. However, the NIJ can and will pre-test  protective fabrics that will be used in other types of protective gear. This is a critical, important step to confirm a fabric’s protection level using the rigorous NIJ Spike Test Protocol. ProWearGear did work with an NIJ accredited test lab to identify the protection levels for protective fabrics to be used in the ProWearGear armored product line – CLASSIC 1, CLASSIC 2 and CLASSIC 3  plus ULTRA GUARD.

ProWearGear Protective Fabrics are:

• spike, blade and slash resistant
light, lean, mean, flexible and fire-retardant
•  with comfort – flex fit designed for both male and female body types

ProWearGear is built with industry standard protective fabrics used in law enforcement, military, correctional, security and search and rescue gear. After considerable testing of the many protective fabrics in the market, ProWearGear selected aramid protective fabrics manufactured by Teijin because of their high quality products, features and benefits and an established supplier to  manufactures.

Armored Gear made by ProWearGear is available in multiple protection levels, CLASSIC 1, CLASSIC 2 and CLASSIC 3 (highest) with options to add ULTRA GUARD to CLASSIC 1, CLASSIC 2, or  CLASSIC 3.  To learn more about the protection available, visit the Protection Options page.

Fabrics used in Gear have been NIJ Tested

  • NIJ process is to certify one garment type – the 2 pc vest used in standard ballistic and spike vests.
  • However, NIJ does pre-test protective fabrics that will be used in other gear to confirm the protection level achieved by the rigorous NIJ Spike Test Protocols.
  • Other garments (shirts, jackets, gaiters, gauntlets, coveralls) do not receive certifications, but instead, are made from protective fabrics that have been specifically tested by the NIJ to confirm their protection level as per the rigorous NIJ Spike Test Protocol.
  • ProWearGear protective fabrics used in the CLASSIC passed the highest NIJ Spike test at Spike Level 3, Standard 0115.00 and ULTRA GUARD was rated  higher than Spike Level 3.
  • This Protection System is available for Armored Gear including  T-Shirts, Jackets, Coveralls and Gaiters.

NIJ Certification Process

  • National Institute of Justice (NIJ), tests and certifies Ballistic and Stab vests. NIJ, part of the Deptartment of Justice is located in Washington, DC.
  • NIJ process is to certify one garment type – the 2 pc vest used in standard ballistic and spike vests.
  • NIJ Certification and Test Protocols are considered international standards for spike,  blade and ballistic vests.
  • NIJ Testing and Certification are a two-step process:
    1. Step 1.  NIJ pre-tests  spike and blade fabrics to confirm protection levels possible with these fabrics for gear including shirts, jackets, gaiters, gauntlets and coveralls.  Spike Protection is rated as:
      • Level 1 – lowest level
      • Level 2 – mid level
      • Level 3 – highest level
    2. Step 2.  2pc. vests made in pre tested fabrics are submitted to NIJ for final testing and certification.
  • Vests that meet the final NIJ test, can be certified, rated and listed on the NIJ website as a certified vest.
